Niue sits as a rocky island in the Pacific Ocean, around 3 hours north of Auckland, New Zealand. With a total population of 1500 people on the island, Niue Education Hub supports 400 students attending Niue ECE, Niue Primary School and Niue High School. The schools follow their own curriculum based on the New Zealand Curriculum Framework, with special additions to support the Niuean language.
In 2017, iPads were introduced into Niue Primary School to support student engagement, and literacy and numeracy.
Working together over two two-hour professional development sessions, teachers upskilled on a range of apps, and identified apps that would immediately fit within the context of their current teaching, and developed approaches and activities that would work with their classes.
Over the next few days, classes were a hub bub of creative, engaged noise as students developed an iMovie using the context of “Mother’s Day”, with students sharing their trailers with the class using Airplay to the class Apple TV. In other classes, students were using the “Math Slide” apps to develop their numeracy skills, with some public “contests” streamed live to the class Apple TV!
At the end of the week, it was clear to all learners, both teachers and students, that the iPads provide:
- An intuitive interface that teachers and students of any age can grasp quickly and easily
- Access to apps that support both collaborative and individual learning
- Increased student engagement, not just “busyness”
